MSPL was founded in 1991 in response to concern among dentists about occupational exposure to mercury from placing new amalgam fillings and from removing old amalgams. Two years of research into the medical literature on factors affecting mercury exposure of the dental team led to the publication of the book Mercury Hazards in Dentistry, which has been welcomed by the profession as the first textbook on how to deal effectively with mercury exposure in the dental surgery.

A series of instructional lectures on mercury safety to postgraduate dental groups resulted in the development of specialist mercury spillage kits and a range of support products which are now sold worldwide direct and through distributors to dentists, schools, industrial and other laboratories, hospitals; in fact, anywhere mercury-containing apparatus or reagents are used.
