Mercury Vapour-Proof Masks

We have obtained a supply of mercury vapour-proof masks which are made from sandwiched charcoal-impregnated cloth, making a comfortable, long-lasting mask which will filter out all mercury vapour at concentrations up to 0.1 milligram per cubic meter (that is, twice the time limited value, TLV) for 150 hours. In practical terms this means that each mask will offer complete protection at these exposure levels, for one month of normal working time.

The mask is ideal for people working in laboratory environments where mercury vapour expsoure may occur; for example, in the instrument repair workshop in a hospital.

In the clinical situation, the mask is suitable for filtering out mercury vapour released, for example, during removal of amalgam tooth restorations; in these situations an outer paper mask should be worn to avoid the risk of cross infection between patients.
